One thing that hasn't got enough press is the ability to use inexpensive Software Defined Radios for the purpose of detecting and examining RF bugs. They are really quite cool. They show a waterfall that represents the data streaming on the electromagentic bands. With the addition of a near field receiver you could use the NFR to find the bugs and then use the SDR to
inspect exactly what waveform is being produced. If its a cheap kids-level
bug on the FM band then its probably just plain FM with no off-modulating.
In this circumstance you would be able to go beside the device and decode the audio signal that the carrier wave is transporting. Wouldn't it be so cool
to find a bug and use an SDR to hear it in action? I'm certainly not suggesting that you buy or use surveillance devices, I'm just saying that the coolness factor of the SDR's potential is astonishing.
