• Modern General Drug Screening

From warmfuzzy@700:100/37 to All on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 01:29:11
I just had a full-scale blood workup and one of those things that was on that list was a drug screen. Now I don't use illegal drugs, not legal drugs, but only prescriptions. So I take L-Dexadrine to help counter my clinical exhaustion that's been bothering me for years. On the drug screen I was tested positive for amphetamines. My doctor was mentioning about the various patient's of hers that never expect urine samples to be so full of information about what they consume. There were even drug tests for the precursor chemicals that are used in purifying various street drugs. So even if your drug of choice isn't detected in the screen the chemicals that are produced or included in the formulation of drugs can themselves be an indicator of the use of street drugs. I am very privileged to be prescribed the L-Dexadrine that I take daily to be able to function properly, but even if your prescription is a fair ways off from the standard chemical it can still read positive. What I mean here is that L-Dexies are not common, with most positive tests being mostly for the regular Dexadrine or other common amphetamine derivatives. So even though my drug was uncommon it was still similar enough to post a positive result in my drug screen.

For those people that would freak out when people mention that they are taking controlled substances, be certain, this is a prescribed medicine for a legitimate mental health condition. I don't do street drugs, nor do I promote the use of street drugs. I'm simply posting this to start some discussion about how effective drug screens can be and how this relates to the detection of various serums.

    Cheers!

When I took my drug screening for my civilian security clearance, one of the things that was mentioned to me is that if I fail the drug test (a urine test in my case), then they will perform additional testing, including hair and skin samples, a polygraph, and interviewing my references that I listed as part of the clearance process. If you turn up positive on one test, they may require additional screening to rule out a false positive.

I believe you are required to list prescriptions on a security clearance.

How ya gonna do it? PS/2 it!

This is a known problem among professional athletes. The fact is that many medications contain so-called "drugs". Therefore, taking medicine for any health problems, no one is immune from a positive test. Therefore, I think this is idiocy. For example, sedative heart drops contain phenobarbital. It takes a long time for it to leave the body. Are you a drug addict after this?
    No.

As my work requires occassional testing, I make a point of reading the releases before I will test.

What I look for is that any "initial indication of positive" is confirmed by a better test than the cheap screening, and at that I have access to all information including chain of custody and retained samples, in the case of any "initial indication of postive."

As you can so mess with a person's life by causing a spruious positive test, and I know so many of the techniques to do that and where the test process itself is vulnerable, I cross out anything in the release I don't like.

Never afraid to piss in the cup for testing, but I am afraid of the games that get played and the slop in the system.

Yes, this is a common problem everywhere. The quality of the tests, the people who do them, questionable requirements. It's the same everywhere.

I don't remember the last time I submitted a urine sample.
And.. I was much younger and healthier then. I am not under
any prescribed or non-prescribed drugs either.

Depending on clearance rules there may be several medical hurdles.

Often one or more psychological exams as well.

Maybe profiling (both passive and active) and retroactive surveillence (you knew there would be permanent black marks in your permanent file when you snuck that kiss with the red headed girl in third grade, right?)

Don't be surprised if there is hair collected as well as blood work (harder to purge hair of illegal drugs).

In some instances you may be put under active surveillance for various reasons. (I was...)
