The original series may never be topped in my opinion, easily my favorite show as a teenager - one that impacted my life in a number of ways. It was always about Scully & Mulder for me though, so when it shifted to other leads, my attention drifted, though I was hardcore enough to stay the course. I even watched the Lone Gunmen series, so that shows my level of dedication. As I mentioned in the X-Files toy thread, I purchased the car that was featured in Fight the Future, an Oldsmobile Intrigue - so I may have been a bit too fanatical at one point, lol. I've actually watched just about everything related to the franchise over the years, and frankly wish they kept going, as some of the reboot was up there with the original run. I'm hoping that the series is revisited again, but only if Gillian is on board and they focus on capturing the magic of the original.
When it comes to the physical media releases, I had a number of the VHS tapes (still have the art cards!) as a youngster but have always found the DVD releases to be sufficient, as they captured the show as it was aired, so I never upgraded. I'm not a stickler by any means, and have upgraded many films to Blu-ray, but this show never struck me as something to urgently repurchase. After seeing the comparisons, I do feel the HD upgrades look sharp at times, but I dislike the cropping, especially when it limits the scope of expression via body language or minimizes the surroundings. That said, rewatching in any form will surely bring a fan back to the glory days!
