• Backups?

    I really like Duplicati (https://www.duplicati.com/). It's free and open-source.

    From its website:

"Duplicati works with standard protocols like FTP, SSH, WebDAV as well
as popular services like Backblaze B2, Tardigrade, Microsoft OneDrive,
Amazon S3, Google Drive, box.com, Mega, hubiC and many others."

"Backup files and folders with strong AES-256 encryption. Save space
with incremental backups and data deduplication. Run backups on any
machine through the web-based interface or via command line interface. Duplicati has a built-in scheduler and auto-updater."

"Duplicati uses strong AES-256 encryption to protect your privacy. You
can also use GPG to encrypt your backup."

"Duplicati can make backups to a large number of targets. For local
backups, all devices can be used that are attached locally or using a
    UNC path, like:

    External USB hard disk drive
    USB thumb drive
Shared folder on another computer in the same network
    Network-attached Storage (NAS)

Backups to these targets using the following standard network protocols
    are supported:

    FTP
    FTP (Alternative)
    OpenStack Object Storage / Swift
    S3 Compatible
    SFTP (SSH)
    WebDAV
The following Cloud Storage Providers are supported natively by
    Duplicati:

    Amazon S3
    Azure blob
    B2 Cloud Storage
    Box.com
    Dropbox
    Google Cloud Storage
    Google Drive
    HubiC
    Jottacloud
    Mega.nz
    Microsoft Office 365 Groups
    Microsoft OneDrive for Business
    Microsoft OneDrive
    Microsoft SharePoint
    OpenStack Simple Storage
    Rackspace CloudFiles
    Rclone
    Sia Decentralized Cloud
    Tardigrade Decentralized Cloud Storage
    Tencent COS

    Other supported targets:

    Tahoe-LAFS"

It's not the download size per se, but two things actually:

[1] it's an msi, which implies it wants hooks in the registry
and all that jazz. i don't want yet-another-windows prog that
    does that.

[2]44mb would expand into a much larger prog. Sofar, restic
and rclone are much smaller and can accomplish great things in
a small pacakage. And.. the latter don't need their fingers
    entwind in the WinOS system.

that's how it's been for a very long time. they discouraged the use of .ini files.

oh there's something being created when you run a program and then it creates params and then there's stuff added in the registry.

so are you uploading them to a host with *unlimited? be careful.
i know people who got terminated because of that.

True enuff.. the windows registry tracks and records a lot of
    stuff anyway.

About 15 yrs ago the host blocked ftp when I rigged up a couple
of cams to send updated images every few minutes. At that time
they said they had concern of the "regular ftp hits" or
something like that. But.. meanwhile, IoT devices and,
internet-connected NASes, and other new technologies have been
introduced. Hopefully the concern for using webstorage has
slackened to accomodate all the other kind of "server" activity
    people use.

After my first large backup of files, the regular updates to
the webhost space would be smaller (only changed files), and
maybe just once a day at the most.

most hosts have something in the contract about you not using their service
as backup storage. they usually have separate services for that.
using a cheap host for backup storage is what will get you.

and you said they advertised 'unlimited', correct?

That's it's because it has its own internal Web server for use. As fore filezize, that's not an issue for me.

s3cmd is great also for unattended backups to AWS S3.

scp is very slow compared to other methods. rsync is great for local
backups. There's AMANDA and Bacula is you need heavy duty backups.
