In squidguard proxy, under pfsense, my clamav never updates and thus the service won't run. I'm getting the following messages from freshclam...

Nevermind, I'm running an NG1100 and it's not powerful enough for this.
If I'd known that ahead of time, I would have purchased something beefier..

I know nothing about this but a Google search of "freshclam database
updates failing" led me to find this on clamav.net:
"If you're unable to find an answer to your question in the FAQ, you can seek help in our clamav-users mailing list, on our Discord server, or by submitting an issue on GitHub. The mailing list archives and existing Github issues (open or closed) may also have an answer to your question."
You might find more helpful answers there.
Another Google search of your reported error means you are running out of RAM:
"..."ERROR: Database load killed by signal 9" or "ERROR: Failed to load
new database", this is caused by the specification of the memory
in the NAS, which is not big enough to extract the growing size of
the Antivirus definition nowadays."
ClamAV uses a LOT of RAM.

Why are you running the AV on the firewall and not the BBS itself? Just curious.
I'm using an old HP EliteDesk 705 (3ghz i5, 8GB RAM, dual INTEL PRO/1000 NICs) for my pfSense setup.
