• Squish for linux?

From Mike Powell@618:250/1 to All on Monday, December 04, 2023 13:17:31
Is there a version of squish for linux? I know there are DOS and OS/2 versions,
but was not sure about linux.

I did a web search and came up with something called squish that is not related to bbsing.

    Thanks!

There is Maximus 3.03, a partially-ported version of Max and Squish. However, I remember it was quite buggy. It's not stable and hasn't been touched in 22 years...did I mention it's only available in source code?

I have it on my website at: https://outpostbbs.net/files/max303s.zip

That makes me sad. I have tried to make my website easy for search engines to index it.

Good luck with that code. Let me know if you get it to work.

In fairness, the search I did may have left your website out because it was
for "squish linux ftn" (I think). I didn't search for maximus, for example.

You are correct. However I have seen epople in fidonet who have ported
it / got it working. (Sqush that is - I don't think anyone has a stable maximus compile for linux).

Isn't squish itself buggy though Sean? I can't remember.

IIRC, the last I heard, Squish seemed to be working but Max had some serious issues like MEX not working properly. There's more but unfortunately that's all faded away over the past 20 years.

Yeah it's abeen a long time. I think honestly if I had the time to setup
a tosser other then built in ones, I'd go HPT and be done with it. Has
every possible feature. I'm just far too lazy and I have no issues with
    postie.

I decided to try using squish for dos and see what happens. I had issues
with postie. Messages would disappear from Talisman after I ran it. At
least I thought it was postie.

I mentioned in the FSX support echo but haven't heard back yet. By
disappear, I mean that Talisman counts them but cannot list them and I
    cannot read them.

With squish they also disappear, but in a slighly different manner. They
seem to "reappear" once I run squish out. I set up a local test area
between this board and that one so I would not flood any network test areas with too much traffic.

That said, before I got to this happy medium, I had trouble in FSX Test
with the same disappear issue I had with postie if I received a message
from another BBS that wasn't running Synchronet or Magicka. They both came when I received messages from someone running Mystic and another someone running golded. Same two guys both times. Once their messages hit the
message base, no other locally posted messages show up, and squish will
stop finding the local messages too.

So I will be posting some new test messages in network test areas to see if
I get any incoming traffic from other nodes, then see which ones cause the issue (or if maybe I have finally figured it out).

please send me a copy of the broken squish base (both the sqd and sqi

That's interesting, if you are able can you catch a packet from them?
Might be too much trouble, but would be interesting to see what's

Also, you're running on raspberry pi right? is it just running raspbian?

Strange. I'm using nothing but Talisman and it's internal tools and
things are pretty darn stable here. No issues with the messages at all. Before postie I used Fastecho which also worked. (Other then the bugs
    everyone knows about fastecho).

No, I have been having some issues connecting with fsx since yesterday
    morning. Traffic has been sporadic.

Yes, I can send a copy. I kept a copy before starting it over.

They have not responded back since.

Yes, it is a Pi 2. uname reports 4.1.17-v7+ on armv71.

It's weird because I'm running Postie & Talisman and am not seeing any issues, who is your fsx hub?

I was pulling mail for that machine from my Magicka system. I switched
over to pulling from my Synchronet system, 21:1/175, to see if that would
help. Don't know if it is related but so far the issue is minimal. Once I
run squish out my locally posted replies show up in the message base.

I will zip and send shortly. Thanks!

Postie was the first thing I ran where I ran into an issue. DOS Squish has some issues but they seem to be temporary (I got it to where the disappeared messages return). I may need to revert back to postie and see what happens with it.

Are you sure your messages are all getting out? I have reset my message areas and added some, and have gone to using postie exclusively. Area corruption is gone, and some messages get out, but many are either not being scanned and bagged, or binkd cannot find the packets (maybe the flo files are not right... I cannot tell since I don't read ftn hex).

apam did some tweaking under the thought that maybe my version of raspbian wasn't interpreting the endian stuff correctly. I recompiled it, started
using postie again, and it all appears to be working now - k-o-w.

I did find a mistake in my binkd.cfg that was causing it not to find the micronet flo files, so that is also now working. Imported a whole bunch of messages in one of the test echos this morning and everything imported ok,
no disappearances that I could see.
