My wife and I attended the Doo Wop Reunion's 20th Anniversary in Clearwater Florida
last night, and the lineup put me in Doo Wop heaven.
Artists included Joey Dee and the Starliters (Peppermint Twist), Larry Chance and the
Earls (Remember Then), the Drifters (Under the Boardwalk, Stand By Me) and the Coasters (Searchin', Yakety Yak and a slew of other hits). Also performing were Kenny
Vance and the Planetones (Loookin' For an Echo), Jay Siegel and The Tokens (The Lion
Sleeps Tonight. Tonight I Fell in Love) and a group out of Detroit known as The Shades
Of Blue (Oh How Happy).
As with any aging group, some singers have lost a bit of their singing voices and some
had to sit a while when singing, but overall it was a great concert.
Years ago, Larry Chance had throat cancer but is now cancer free. Kenny Vance suffered
from a tear in his artery but mad a comeback and still sounds great!
Growing up in Detroit, I wasn't exposed to the group harmony that was prevalent in
Philadelphia and the Bronx, but once I was exposed, it became my favorite form of
music.

Joey Dee and the Starliters played at my cousins engagement party back in the
late 60's or early 70's at a restaurant in the Bronx (I was not there as I was
a little kid).. Kenny Vance is unbelievable.. A friend of mine was very close
friends with Jay Black, I had asked him to sing Cara Mia at my daughters wedding for her and I to dance to. Unfortunately, due to Covid we had to postpone the wedding, when we rescheduled a year later, Jay's Dementia was really bad, so he couldn't do it, one thing though, he never lost that unbelievable voice!! Unfortunately, only a few months later he passed on.. The
old singers from my youth and just before are all going..
We'll all be looking for an echo soon...
My wife and I saw Jay Black several times, and you are right about his voice. He was a
bit crude at times, but very talented.
The "echo" is probably the root of the group harmony style of music. Thank god for
that. Doo-Wop hopefully will never die, even though some of the greats have left us.

Oh yea he was definitely VERY crude at times, but he had a heart of gold. I think that came from his upbringing. Then again, he was enjoying life..

Exactly!! It is, I started listening to Doo-Wop when I was a kid, WCBS 101 in
NY was the oldies station. I listened to it for years. I guess that is where my
love for ALL music came from. I listen to all music, Classical, Blues, Oldies,
Heavy Metal, Hair Rock, etc. Rap is the only thing I can't deal with.. After all is said and done I always go back to Doo-Wop especially on a Sunday night
as it brings back a local DJ's Sunday night Show Don K Reed did the Doo-Wop show on CBS when I was growing up...

Have you ever heard "The Alley Cats"?? They are an a cappella Doo Wop group out of California, and they really put on quite a show.

I just checked them out and Subscribed to their channel. Nice!

I saw them at the 2001 National Square Dance Convention in Anaheim, California...I was impressed!! :)
I've always been a fan of a cappella (music with no accompaniment), especially those with barbershop (mens) or beautyshop (ladies) quartets. It's not as easy as it looks, though!! :)
There is a group called "Lunch Break" out of Tennessee, that has
several videos on YouTube. My favorite is their rendition of "Old
MacDonald Had A Deformed Farm" at Carnegie Hall...it's a scream!! :D
Just search YouTube for "Lunch Break Carnegie Hall"...but be sure to
empty your bladder, and not be eating, drinking, or driving, before
viewing it...or you will have a mess on your hands (and elsewhere)
from laughing. <G> I still chuckle every time I view it.
Laughter is as contagious as yawning <YAWN!> (made you do it <G>).
I'm up before the butt crack of dawn, thanks to nature and a nightmare,
so I figured I'd do some quick BBS work, before going back to bed. I
have some errands to do later this morning, before the second Tuesday Windows Update <ugh!> requires some downtime for my computers.
