Definition: High blood pressure is a chronic condition that occurs when blood flows
through your arteries at a higher-than-normal pressure.
Symptoms: High blood pressure forces your heart to work harder to pump blood.
Complications: If left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to serious health
problems, including heart disease, stroke, heart failure, aneurysms, and kidney failure.
Measurement: Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) using two
numbers: Systolic pressure: The top number, which measures the pressure in your blood
vessels when your heart beats, and Diastolic pressure: The bottom number, which
measures the pressure in your arteries while your heart is relaxed
Risk factors: Salty foods, sugary foods, and foods high in saturated fats can increase
blood pressure. Other risk factors include certain medications, kidney disease,
obstructive sleep apnea, and tobacco use.
Treatment: If you have high blood pressure, you should make an appointment to see a
cardiovascular specialist.
